A view of Clinton, Louisiana's main street in the late 19th Century. H.L. Mayer is not related to the Meyer brothers, whose store likely was near the building to the far left. (Photo courtesy of the Jackson Historic District Commission.)
My family's history
"Six years ago, I found these letters mentioned in a footnote to a chapter in Elliott Ashkenazi's 'Business of Jews in Louisiana, 1840-1875' and never imagined the path they would lead me along as I unraveled my family's history. Thank you to the Southern Jewish Historical Society and editors of the journal for their wisdom and guidance, and to my family for its support while I was off chasing ghosts."
